concept
In my pigeon project, I want to investigate the oriental elements in London cityscape from the Eastern perspective. By taking myself as a foreigner, physically collecting pictures in oriental based places such as New Malden, Tottenham court road area, China Town, Colindale and other similar areas in central London. Then virtually collecting the news and archives toward those places from English input research.
There are three elements in this work—newspaper collaged pigeon, geopolitical video on a sculpture made by found polystyrene, site-specific letter installation. They stand at different perspectives respectively when one lives in a foreign country--a media to commute with others, cityscape created by geopolitical impact and the image of a specific community made from social media.
I never heard of Josenjok people until doing this project. While researching them, I have visited many oriental places in London. I have been amazed by many communities who earn their livings by doing a business or opening a restaurant making home food without losing their tradition. I think this nostalgic feeling causes more impacts when it merges to different foreign communities as a counter to the residents. And in my proposal, it changes the city itself too. Lastly, by doing this work, I want to open a dialogue between virtual data and reality, proposing a way to predict future cityscape and rethink the role of citizens from different social groups.
