concept

I have been paying attention to the relationship between urban space and people and to the abstract idea of urban alienation. An image (or impression) of the urban landscape is created with the government's cultural policies and the interaction between tourists and city-dwellers. The image of urban landscape, presented in the graphic data of social network, seems to create economic benefits as well as a butterfly effect on different entities in the surroundings. With the use of local elements and site-specific creation, I tried to find clues to demonstrate such relationship.

The exhibition "Tainan Monopoly" is one of the projects in the artist-in-residence program at Soulangh Cultural Park, dedicated to the "castle town" Tainan where the cultural and creative industries are blooming and many places are booming with internet celebrities and check-ins. Inspired by the concept of "monopoly rent" proposed by a British economic geographer David Harvey, I have created the exhibits after perusing the recommended itinerary on Travel Tainan and playfully given the name of "Tainan Monopoly" to the exhibition. I would like to observe the tourism business in Tainan from a tourist perspective and to fully present how the revenue generated from the cultural sector drives the growth of local economy under capitalist systems. 


All the photos on display are the records taken from several visits of the scenic spots in Tainan during the guerrilla field research. Selected via the tourist gaze, the subjects are presented in poor image and displayed sporadically all over the exhibition space. In addition, based on the top 10 image results of Google search with "historical sites in Tainan" as search term during 11:30 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. on June 7th, ten 3D-printed sculptures were made with the assistance of photogrammetry and the 3D models automatically generated by modeling programs. The automatically generated models re-created the shape and texture of the subject matter in the top 10 images, and the size of the models was determined by the publicity of the subject matter on the Internet. The birth of an image (or impression) symbolizes the collected impression on a place at a certain point in time for a certain cyberspace community. The 3D-printed sculptures are the cultural replication and a tangible form of the image/impression/data on the internet. Finally, all the original and replicated 3D pictures were digitally analyzed to visualize and materialize the impression of Tainan historical sites. In the exhibition, different forms of media, such as the historical materials of Tainan, audio recordings from the fieldwork, tourism flyers, photographs, installation arts, and other exhibits, were juxtaposed in order create a scattered experience for viewers.




概念

城市空間與人之間的關係,與城市疏離的抽象概念,是我近年一直在研究的議題。城市景觀如何在社群網路的圖庫資料裡,因政府的文化政策、觀光客與城市居民互相牽引的關係;從圖像生產如何產生經濟效益,進而引發該環境中,不同角色個體之間的蝴蝶效應。我以駐地取材及現地製作創作為辯證的方式,試圖找尋印證關係的線索。

此次在蕭壠文化園區駐村成果展的作品『台南地產大亨』,為一針對文化創意產業發展興盛、網紅打卡景點爆炸的府城而製作的計畫。概念引用英國地理學家David Harvey提出的「壟斷地租」,並參考台南旅遊網上的推薦行程集錦後,加入遊戲意味後改名而成。我以「遊客」的視角觀察台南的觀光生態,希望將資本主義社會下,文化產生利潤而帶動產業地方經濟發展的景觀現況完整呈現出。


所有展出的相片來自於駐村期間,以游擊式考察出訪台南各景點的田野紀錄,透過觀光客的凝視挑選主角,用弱影像的語法大量穿插在展覽空間。十件3D列印雕塑是於6月7日11點30分至凌晨12點,以「台南古蹟景點」為Google搜尋引擎的關鍵字,所出現討論度最高且排名前十的所有圖片,並採攝影測量法、使用建模軟體自動產生的3D模型(包含其形狀和肌理、大小依據網路討論度高低而定) 。每一個生產出的影像代表著某一時間在網路空間中,某個網絡對於某一地方的​集合印象,是一網路影像的文化再製、一有觸覺的概念、亦為一資料庫文本。最後將原始和再製的所有3D圖像用理性的數據分析,將網路資料視覺化及觸覺化的「台南古蹟印象」雕塑,與台南文史資料、田野錄音、觀光宣傳單、相片記錄及錄像並置於展覽中,給觀者一個以不同文本形式拼貼呈現的破碎性敘事經驗。
